Museum of Medieval Stockholm in Stockholm, Sweden Wander

The museum enables visitors to experience medieval Stockholm, with its brick houses and booths, workshops, harbour and gallows. The Museum of Medieval Stockholm (Stockholms medeltidsmuseum), centrally located north of the Royal Palace, was constructed around old monuments excavated in an extensive archaeological dig (dubbed Riksgropen, "National/State Pit") in the late 1970s. Part of Stockholm's city wall, dating from the early 16th century, was also found. The Museum of Medieval Stockholm (Stockholms Medeltidsmuseum) is a distinctive gallery with an exceptional story. Centrally located north of the Royal Palace, it came to be thanks to the wealth of discoveries unearthed during an extensive archaeological dig (dubbed Riksgropen, "National/State Pit" because of its depth and magnitude, involving over 50,000 meters of soil) in 1978-80.

The Museum is built around the findings from the largest excavation in Stockholm. Our underground exhibition features 55 meters of the original 16th century town wall, the medieval graveyard of Helgeandshuset and Riddarholmsskeppet, a war ship from the 1520s. Behind the Knight’s armour you’ll also find the King’s secret tunnel to the castle.
